Please pardon my crowing....

... but I just heard that I passed my final paper. I have a Masters' degree. It has taken far longer than anticipated, because I had a bit of a breakdown in the middle, but I did. I actually did it!

Next up, sign language course.

What? Why are you looking at me like that? It's called lifelong learning, and I've wanted to learn sign since my niece's deafness was diagnosed in 1988!

Can I say it again? Loud enough to be heard by the lost little girl who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. You did it, kiddo!

Congratulations.

For me, a Masters degree was very significant, as it marked the beginning of my ability to obtain any sort of academic employment. It really was a turning point in my life, much more important than a BA.

@Stephen Part of the significance of this achievement is that I never got a BA. I demonstrated equivalency and got enrolled onto the Masters' programme that way. I'm not sure anyone within academia will ever consider me an academic, though.

Brilliant news Karyn!

Well done for sticking with it.

Brilliant news!

What does it matter whether anybody considers you an academic - you've got your Masters and you've proved you can do it despite all the stuff academia puts in the way to trip you up.

Go out and celebrate properly - and then on with the sign language.

Well done you! It's something I may come back to one day, but I have nothing but respect for people who can complete a masters while working, bringing up a family and getting on with life. Crow away - you've earned it :0)

I'm in the same boat with Downes. The Masters in Instructional Technology really helps with employment (even outside academia).

The other thing I use it for - fancy jargon for explaining why I do what I do ;)

Congrats on your hard-earned achievement!

Thanks all, for your kind words! I shall indeed celebrate.

What's the best way of saying this?
Yes:

It only took me 10 years to get my Master's in Teaching. I envy you as I look at the light at the end of the tunnel for my Ph.D. But first one more extension and having to find time to complete my data analysis and writing my dissertation and working and teaching my son to drive.... You have every right to be proud and crow as loud as you want. It's not the piece of paper but the effort behind it that is important.
